    Stability of quantized time-delay nonlinear systems: A Lyapunov-Krasowskii-functional approach

    Lyapunov-Krasowskii functionals are used to design quantized control laws for nonlinear continuous-time systems in the presence of constant delays in the input. The quantized control law is implemented via hysteresis to prevent chattering. Under appropriate conditions, our analysis applies to stabilizable nonlinear systems for any value of the quantization density. The resulting quantized feedback is parametrized with respect to the quantization density.     Excitation dynamics in polyacene molecules on rare-gas clusters

    Laser-induced fluorescence spectra and excitation lifetimes of anthracene, tetracene, and pentacene molecules attached to the surface of solid argon clusters have been measured with respect to cluster size, density of molecules, and excitation density. Results are compared to previous studies on the same sample molecules attached to neon clusters. A contrasting lifetime behavior of anthracene on neon and argon clusters is discussed, and mechanisms are suggested to interpret the results. Although both neon and argon clusters are considered to be weakly interacting environments, we find that the excitation decay dynamics of the studied acenes depends significantly on the cluster material. Moreover, we find even qualitative differences regarding the dependence on the dopant density. Based on these observations, previous assignments of collective radiative and non-radiative decay mechanisms are discussed in the context of the new experimental findings.& nbsp;(c) 2022 Author(s).     The Escherichia coli RnlA–RnlB toxin–antitoxin complex: production, characterization and crystallization

    The Escherichia coli rnlAB operon encodes a toxin–antitoxin module that is involved in protection against infection by bacteriophage T4. The full-length RnlA–RnlB toxin–antitoxin complex as well as the toxin RnlA were purified to homogeneity and crystallized. When the affinity tag is placed on RnlA, RnlB is largely lost during purification and the resulting crystals exclusively comprise RnlA. A homogeneous preparation of RnlA–RnlB containing stoichiometric amounts of both proteins could only be obtained using a His tag placed C-terminal to RnlB. Native mass spectrometry and SAXS indicate a 1:1 stoichiometry for this RnlA–RnlB complex. Crystals of the RnlA–RnlB complex belonged to space group C2, with unit-cell parameters a = 243.32, b = 133.58, c = 55.64 Å, ÎČ = 95.11°, and diffracted to 2.6 Å resolution. The presence of both proteins in the crystals was confirmed and the asymmetric unit is likely to contain a heterotetramer with RnlA2:RnlB2 stoichiometry

    The function of copulatory plugs in Caenorhabditis remanei: hints for female benefits

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mating plugs that males place onto the female genital tract are generally assumed to prevent remating with other males. Mating plugs are usually explained as a consequence of male-male competition in multiply mating species. Here, we investigated whether mating plugs also have collateral effects on female fitness. These effects are negative when plugging reduces female mating rate below an optimum. However, plugging may also be positive when plugging prevents excessive forced mating and keeps mating rate closer to a females' optimum. Here, we studied these consequences in the gonochoristic nematode <it>Caenorhabditis remanei</it>. We employed a new CO<sub>2</sub>-sedation technique to interrupt matings before or after the production of a plug. We then measured mating rate, attractiveness and offspring number.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The presence of a mating plug did not affect mating rate or attractiveness to roving males. Instead, females with mating plugs produced more offspring than females without copulatory plugs.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our experiment suggests that plugging might have evolved under male-male competition but represents a poor protection against competing males in our experiment. Even if plugging does not reduce mating rate, our results indicate that females may benefit from being plugged in a different sense than remating prevention.</p

    Real-time dynamics of the formation of hydrated electrons upon irradiation of water clusters with extreme ultraviolet light

    Free electrons in a polar liquid can form a bound state via interaction with the molecular environment. This so-called hydrated electron state in water is of fundamental importance e.g.~in cellular biology or radiation chemistry. Hydrated electrons are highly reactive radicals that can either directly interact with DNA or enzymes, or form highly excited hydrogen (H∗) after being captured by protons. Here, we investigate the formation of the hydrated electron in real-time employing XUV femtosecond pulses from a free electron laser, in this way observing the initial steps of the hydration process. Using time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy we find formation timescales in the low picosecond range and resolve the prominent dynamics of forming excited hydrogen states

    The Debrisoft Âź monofilament debridement pad for use in acute or chronic wounds: A NICE medical technology guidance

    As part of its Medical Technology Evaluation Programme, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) invited a manufacturer to provide clinical and economic evidence for the evaluation of the Debrisoft ¼ monofilament debridement pad for use in acute or chronic wounds. The University of Birmingham and Brunel University, acting as a consortium, was commissioned to act as an External Assessment Centre (EAC) for NICE, independently appraising the submission. This article is an overview of the original evidence submitted, the EAC’s findings and the final NICE guidance issued. The sponsor submitted a simple cost analysis to estimate the costs of using Debrisoft¼ to debride wounds compared with saline and gauze, hydrogel and larvae. Separate analyses were conducted for applications in home and applications in a clinic setting. The analysis took an UK National Health Service (NHS) perspective. It incorporated the costs of the technologies and supplementary technologies (such as dressings) and the costs of their application by a district nurse. The sponsor concluded that Debrisoft¼ was cost saving relative to the comparators. The EAC made amendments to the sponsor analysis to correct for errors and to reflect alternative assumptions. Debrisoft¼ remained cost saving in most analyses and savings ranged from £77 to £222 per patient compared with hydrogel, from £97 to £347 compared with saline and gauze, and from £180 to £484 compared with larvae depending on the assumptions included in the analysis and whether debridement took place in a home or clinic setting. All analyses were severely limited by the available data on effectiveness, in particular a lack of comparative studies and that the effectiveness data for the comparators came from studies reporting different clinical endpoints compared with Debrisoft¼. The Medical Technologies Advisory Committee made a positive recommendation for adoption of Debrisoft¼ and this has been published as a NICE medical technology guidance (MTG17).The Birmingham and Brunel Consortium is funded by NICE to act as an External Assessment Centre for the Medical Technologies Evaluation Programme
